As of August 2023, all of our taillight covers are now cut from heavy duty aluminum to avoid rusting and the textured black powder coating helps to protect them as long as possible.
For directions on installation, see below.
Wrangler JL or Gladiator:
- Clean taillight lens thoroughly. An alcohol wipe or lint free cloth with alcohol are recommended.
- Dry taillight lens thoroughly.
- Once it is clean and dry, peel plastic from the 3M adhesive tape.
- Carefully position taillight cover and then press it firmly in place.
- Warm them up with a hair dryer so they are warm to the touch (do not overheat) and then press them firmly in place again. Let them cool naturally.
Tips:
a) Adhesive is very strong, so make sure it is correctly positioned before pressing to taillight. If you need to remove it, you should use new tape.
b) If you wish to remove taillight covers at any time, use a heat gun to carefully warm them up. This will make the tape more pliable and easier to peel. If you skip this step, you will bend the taillight covers during removal.
c) Use caution when leaving vehicle where sun beats down heavily on your taillight covers for extended periods. This makes the adhesive soft, which will allow them to come off easier until they cool down again.
d) As with any external accessory, use caution in car washes. Touchless washes are recommended to reduce the possibilty of being pulled off by high powered cleaning brushes.
*NOTE: Properly cleaning your taillights before installation is critical. The adhesive tape we use is a professional grade adhesive, which is widely used in the automotive indistry. Failure to clean the surface properly may result in poor adhesion and they may not stay securely attached to the vehicle. We can not be responsible for lost or damaged taillight covers due to improper installation.
Wrangler JK:
- Remove old screws from taillight lens, noting that two are shorter and two are longer.
- Place new taillight cover over the taillight lens, aligning the 4 screw holes over the lens cover holes.
- Put the new screws into the 4 holes, using short ones where the short ones came out and long ones where the longer screws came out.
- Using a well fitted phillips screwdriver, tighten the screws down until the taillight cover is snug. *Note: using a screwdriver that does not fit properly may cause the heads to strip, as you will need to apply a good amount of pressure to the screws.
- If you have any paint chips or stripping on the screw heads, you can use a small amount of black paint or a black sharpie marker to touch up any silver that is showing.
- For more details, watch the video on our Etsy store.
Tips:
- For a different look, you can repaint the screws a different color, like matching the color of your Jeep.
- If you should need more screws for any reason, these are #10 x 1-1/2” and #10 x 2” stainless steel panhead screws, available at most hardware stores.
Wrangler CJ/YJ/TJ:
- Remove the 4 screws from the corners of your taillight assembly.
- This is a good time to wash the taillight lens if desired, as it is easier to access before putting on the taillight cover.
- You can discard the original screws if desired, or put them in a safe place in case you remove your taillight covers in the future.
- If your taillights are mounted with the reverse lights at the bottom, that is not a factory default installation. It is recommended to turn them over so that the reverse light are mounted at the top to look correct with these taillight covers.
- Put one of the new black screws (provided) through one of the corners of the taillight cover, then place one of the black plastic spacers on the screw and then thread the screw into the taillight hole. Do not tighten yet.
- Start the other 3 screws through the taillight cover, then a spacer and into the taillight hole.
- Once all 4 screws are in place, tighten them each down until the taillight cover is secure, being careful not to overtighten. **CAUTION: over tightening the screws can strip the holes in the taillight, which will lead to a loose, insecure fit.
- If the black paint on the screws becomes chipped during installation, you can use some black paint or black nail polish to re-paint the screw heads.
Tips:
- For a different look, you can repaint the screws a different color, like matching the color of your Jeep.
- If you should need more screws for any reason, these are #8 x 1” stainless steel panhead screws, available at most hardware stores.
NOTES:
Taillight covers are available from various manufacturers in different materials. You should choose which ones you purchase based on where you live. Many are made from steel. No matter how well they are prepared, it only takes a minor scrape to allow moisture to reach the metal. In high salt areas like states that border the ocean or where road salt is used in the winter, they will rust quickly. Windy areas tend to blow sand and debris against them and deteriorate the finish sooner.
We currently discontinued our steel taillight covers and have transitioned to Premium Aluminum taillight covers. Aluminum will not rust, but can experience corrosion over time, especially in high moisture areas.
It should be noted that any metal exposed to the outdoors will break down over time. We cannot guarantee any specific lifespan on our premium aluminum taillight covers, as it all depends on environment. If you are worried about this, it is recommended to coat them with protective undercoating spray or plastidip.
If you want taillight covers that you know will not rust or corrode, some manufacturers offer acrylic or 3D printed taillight covers. They are less durable against breakage, but they will never rust or corrode.
